Your neck and jawline ritual
Working the platysma along its whole line, from the collarbone up to the ear. Read the short notes first, then follow the move on each side.
Before you start - read this
Short rules, and they hold for every pass.
- Warm, clean hands. The neck has thin skin and it flinches at cold fingers. Rub the hands together first.
- Fingers flat, not clawed. The third and fourth fingers stay straight and lie flat on the muscle, so the pressure spreads instead of digging in.
- Deep enough, never painful. You should feel the muscle under the fingers. Sharp pain means lighten up, not push harder.
- Cross hands over. The right hand works the left side of the neck, the left hand works the right side. That is what keeps the line diagonal.
- Skip it over anything inflamed. Thyroid problems, swollen lymph nodes, a fresh procedure on the neck: check with your doctor before you work this zone.
The platysma map - where you work
One line, traced clearly from the collarbone to the ear. The hand always works the opposite side of the neck.
1 · The lower attachment
Where every pass begins. Place the middle and ring fingers on the lowest edge of the platysma attachment, right next to the collarbone. This is the end of the muscle, and it is the end that holds everything above it.
2 · The diagonal line
From the inner edge of the collarbone up to the ear. Trace the movement clearly along that line, diagonally. Not a random stroke over the skin: you are following the muscle itself.
3 · Both sides, evenly
Five to seven passes on the left and the same on the right. The neck answers only when both sides have been worked, and it is usually the tighter side that shows the cord.
The move, step by step
Five to seven passes on each side of the neck. Slow, unhurried, never forced.
- Warm, clean hands. Place the middle and ring fingers on the lowest edge of the platysma attachment, right next to the collarbone.
- Keep the third and fourth fingers straight and lying flat on the muscle.
- Trace the movement clearly along the line from the inner edge of the collarbone to the ear, diagonally.
- With your right hand work the left side of the neck. With your left hand, the right side.
- The movement should be deep enough to feel the muscle, but never painful.
- Five to seven passes on each side. Then stop: this muscle answers to regularity, not to force.
What it gives you
A platysma that is tightened and toned; the jawline held from below again instead of melting into the neck; and the deep pull along the front of the neck letting go, pass after pass.
