Your intraoral lift ritual
Working the deep cheek muscles from inside the mouth, the layer that outside hands never reach. Read the safety notes first, then follow the three points in order.
Before you start - read this
Short rules, and they hold for every repetition.
- Clean hands, always. Wash thoroughly, then work in single-use vinyl or nitrile gloves, never with bare fingers.
- Short nails. Trim and file them before you begin, so nothing can catch or scratch inside the mouth.
- Pressure, never pain. You are looking for pressure and release. Sharp pain means stop, not push harder.
- One side at a time. The right and left hand do exactly the same thing, each on its own side of the mouth, one after the other.
- Skip it when inflamed or injured. Any inflammation in the mouth, gums or throat, and any jaw joint trauma or clicking: see your specialist first, do not self-treat.
Why this zone answers
Three things worth knowing before your first repetition.
- One knot holds the lower face. Up to nine muscles converge into a small dense point just beside the corner of the mouth, the modiolus. It is not fixed to bone: the muscles themselves hold it, so their tone decides whether the mouth corner sits up or down.
- A ligament described only in 2025. Anatomists named the ligament of modiolus in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in February 2025. It runs from that knot straight into the skin and helps hold the corner of the mouth in place.
- The jaw rarely rests. A 2025 meta-analysis put self-reported awake clenching at about 25.9% of adults, roughly one in four, and most of them never notice it. That is the daily load this ritual answers.
The intraoral map - three points
One entry point, one boundary you stay in front of, and one direction the lift travels along.
The intraoral shelf
Your entry point. Gently place the pad of the thumb inside the mouth, about a centimetre away from the nostril, and let it rest against the shelf of bone you feel there. Find it slowly, without forcing the lip.
The pterygoid boundary
Your boundary landmark, the deep corner far behind the last upper molar. You need to know where it is so that you stay in front of it. Do not dig into it and do not press it: it only tells you where the working area ends.
The lift vector
Your direction of travel. From the shelf the finger pads reach the cheekbone from the inside, where you feel a vault in the form of an arch. That arch, out to the edge of the cheekbone, is the line along which the lift happens.
The release-and-lift move
Five to seven repetitions on each side. Slow, unhurried, never forced.
- Gloves on, nails short. Gently insert the pads of the thumbs, set about a centimetre from each nostril, from the inside.
- Bring the pads of the fingers onto the cheekbone from the inside. You will feel the vault, the arch. You enter this archway.
- Clamp the muscle with the rest of the fingers from the outside, a clamp that holds everything fixed.
- Now begin to diverge: the thumbs and all the other fingers move apart, to the sides, out to the edge of the cheekbone.
- Return to the starting position. That is one repetition.
- Repeat five to seven times, then do exactly the same on the other side.
What it gives you
Facial muscles that are simply unreachable from the outside, the places where muscle attaches to bone, a face that reveals itself and features that come back well defined.
Gloves on, thumbs inside, fingers clamping from outside: the divergence out to the edge of the cheekbone.
